Nery v.s. the press. FTW

It had to be said in Mexican headlines
It had to be chattered on car radio news broadcasts
It had to be screamed in the kitchen
It had to be yelled in the basement where uncles were fighting

It had to be howled on the streets by newsboys to bus conductors
It had to be loud mouthed on the comedy hour
It had to turn up the volume in university ballrooms

It had to be written in library books, footnoted
It had to be in the headlines of Record and Ovaciones
It had to be barked on Spicy Soccer
It had to be heard in forums through noob posts
It had to be played on wire services

And it had to be said with a big mouth:

Nery doesnt care what the Mexican press say about him..

Under the Sod

After watching Eduardo Lilingston in Chivas USA’s season opener against the Rapids I have come to the conclusion that he will be another tragedy in the long list of Mexican strikers to play in MLS.

Twenty-seven minutes into the match the nomadic striker controlled a long ball with his chest and from the edge of the penalty area proceeded to shoot the ball straight into the goal-keeper’s hands. To make matters worse Lillingston, gifted with a rebound, sent his second shot straight to the moon. And in the event that he would have scored the play would not have counted as it got whistled offside.

Up until this point in the match I had forgotten all about Lillingston whom appeared to have disappeared under the sod. This was the highlight of Lillingston’s debut as he would be subbed out at the start of the second-half for the out of form Maykel Galindo; who running on only one leg caused more problems than Chivas newest acquisition.

I am not sure why Lillingston was brought in; other than to fill the quota of Mexican players for a team that was supposed to mirror club Guadalajara’s nationalistic tradition. Chivas-USA with their multiple failed attempts to bring in big name Mexican players only count on the aging Claudio Saurez; who at the ripe age of 40yrs old waited until the last minute to re-sign with the team.

En la Torre

The De la Torre dynasty pictured from left to right; Chepo, Nestor, and Yayo appear ready to conquer Mexican football. With Nestor de la Torre's recent assignment as the Mexican Football Federation’s (FMF) new director of the national team committee the table seems set for a Chivas takeover.

“Having worked with Jorge Vergara does not mean that I arrived because of him,” claimed Nestor upon his presentation. “I am no longer part of the Chivas institution and you know what that team means to me. I am not here to be anyone’s puppet,” proclaimed Nestor, who had served as vice president of club Guadalajara.

Despite Nestor’s claims Vergara’s influence has come a long way in making drastic changes within the FMF and his recent assignment will forever be linked to the Chivas owner. That said; Yayo and Chepo can not be far behind. Yayo, once proclaimed as the best coach in the world by Vergara, is currently Cruz Azul’s sporting director. It is too early to tell if he will ever make a move to be part of the FMF but one thing is for sure, Nestor can count on his vote of confidence.

As for Chepo, according to legend and Wikipedia, he is the youngest coach to win a Mexican League championship in the last decade at age 40 years & 27 days. Chepo helped guide Guadalajara to their 11th championship making Chivas the most successful Club in the Mexican first division. As head coach of Toluca Chepo has won his second league championship and currently has the Diablos Rojos atop the table with a ten match undefeated streak; a third title for Chepo could very well be a reality. Chepo’s short term success can also help catapult him to the reigns of the Mexican National Team.

¿Qué Pasa, Chivas U.S.A.?

The Borg appears to be useless. I had hoped he could do for Chivas what he did in his brief stay at Bolton Wanderers and score goals in the few minutes he did play no matter what tourney it was. Well, that has not been the case and with each passing game Jared Borgetti appears to be more frustrated.

Jorge Vergara brought in the Borg in hopes of strengthening Chivas for the Copa Libertadores. Last nights match against Caracas, which was won with an Aaron Galindo strike in the 80th minute, should be the last game that the Borg starts in. Seriously, the CL games are better suited for the hungry upstart Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.

The Borg would be better put to use at the Home Depot Center as Chivas USA newest aging Mexican star. They need him now more than ever; Claudio Saurez has been trying to retire for the past three years but Vergara won’t let him. The Emperador needs his rest, let the Borg attract the non-believers..

El Jagger Martinez

I do not place much emphasis on friendly games, especially those against third rate South America sides. Still, I watched the Mexico vs. Bolivia game because first Sven’s balls are on the line and second I have been following Israel “Jagger” Martinez exploits with the Tricolor.

He is one of those players which call-up always gets questioned. And to be honest I always thought he deserved a shot; well since last season. Anyways, el Jagger might not be World Cup material but he is still nice to have around.

Chucho el Roto y Los Abandoned

The Tricolor jrs concluded their mediocre participation in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship with a two-goal draw against hosts Trinidad & Tobago. With Juan Carlos Chavez at the helm the young Tricolor finished the tourney at the bottom of group B with only one point with two goals for and five against.

“It is natural that I get the blame but I had spoken with Guillermo Cantu and my contract had a stipulation that I could leave whenever I received an offer from a club," said Jesus "Chucho" Ramirez who abandoned the youth national team one month before the start of the Under-20 Championship. "I simply made a decision. Having the opportunity to come to America was something I did not have to think about. I am calm, I am in peace,” concluded Ramirez.

U-20, I'm gonna Miss You

I knew it from the start you would break my heart but still I had to play this painful part. It's a tragedy for me to see the dream is over. And I never will forget the day we met. U-20, I'm gonna miss you. Now I'm sitting here wasting my time, I just don't know what I should do..

Gotta blame the U-20's failure on something.. Blame it on Chucho. He said he didn't need the U-20, told them good-bye. He sacrificed a good love to satisfy his pride. Chucho you dastardly mutt I hope you get sacked from America after you coach them into a deeper hole..

Don Juan Chilorio

Carlos Darwin Quintero signals the chiquito and the number of times he punctured it as Santos Laguna overcame Canadian pub team Montreal Impact 5-2 (5-4 aggregate) to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League Semifinals.
